I'm a curious creature with a colorful resume. Designer, writer, organizer, community activator. Healthy, active, and funny. Lover of bicycle culture and car-free living. Deeply involved in Zen Buddhist community - in fact, I am a recently ordained Zen priest! Practitioner of gravity, levity, and reality. All about the paradox.

Note: I am willing to wander but not interested in relocating out of Canada.

Personality
My Personality:
Adventurous, Creative, Intelligent
I'm happiest when:
I've done a little work, a little play, and a little mischief: in service to all beings.
The things that annoy me are:
Any person or campaign or media that generates fear. Real-estate mania, greed, desperation. Consumer capitalism in general pisses me off (but hey i'm part of it, so I don't waste energy railing about it).
The best day of my life was when:
Today. No, wait, yesterday. Or was it Tuesday? I forget.
If I could have dinner with any three people, they would be:
Bette Midler (she's sharp and hilarious), Roman Mars (podcaster: 99% Invisible), Adam Buxton (weird British podcaster), my brother (cuz he's cool and gets my jokes).
Interests
My interests, hobbies, and pastimes include...
Cooking, Eating Out, Gardening, History, Knitting/Sewing, Movies, Museums, Music (listening), Music (performing), Painting & Drawing, Politics, Reading, Travel, Volunteering, Writing
The physical activities I'm interested in are:
Aerobics, Biking, Camping, Dancing, Hiking/Backpacking, Skiing, Swimming, Walking, Yoga (hatha)
For fun I like to...
Hang out in the town square and fraternize with the riffraff.
My favorite movies:
I Heart Huckabees. Rivers and Tides. Anything by Todd Haynes (I'm Not There, Velvet Goldmine, Safe). Strange movies I find at the library in white unmarked cases.
My favorite music:
Not really a follower, techno/drum'n'bass for late night git'er-done or dancing, open to everything.
My favorite books:
Just read Sweetland and Small Game Hunting at the Local Cowards Gun Club. Anything by Michael Crummey. Megan Daum. Don DeLillo. Martin Amis. Margaret Atwood. Various buddhisty things like Norman Fischer, Pema Chodron, Brad Warner. Zen Mind Beginners Mind, of course (just for kicks). I like contemporary fiction and non-fic, not nostalgic for things I read in high school.
Values
The virtues I consider most important are...
Courage, Kindness, Patience
The things I'm most grateful for in life are...
My wonderful friends. My sangha and teachers. My brother. Neighbors. My city neighborhood. My country -- we won the lottery just by being in Canada. The opportunity to spend lots of time on an amazing little faraway island. The city of Vancouver. Amtrak, TransLink, IslandLink, bike lanes. My life as a human on this singular planet. My strong body that functions well and gets me around. A working bike pump and a can of oil. My best dogfriend. Good coffee. The place that makes great bagels. The path that brought me here. What's not to be grateful for?
My goals, and what I want out of life...
To be of joyful service.
My greatest accomplishments in life have been...
Oh I've done many odd things i am proud of...published a cycling magazine, created festivals, threw some great parties, lived in a protest camp in the path of a highway, did some wonderful graphic design, wrote stuff, made peace with my brother. Lent a hand here and there.
Five or ten years from now, I see myself...
Surrounded as now, by loving people of great diversity. Dividing time between city and country life. Here, there, everywhere.
My political inclination can be described as...
Liberal
Spirituality
Spiritual Orientation:
Buddhist
I consider my spirituality...
The central focus of my life
What brought me to my spiritual path and motivated my interest...
I ran, I tripped, I stumbled and I fell -- splat! -- into the path. Without realizing I had always been on it. Zen, because it vexes me deeply.
"The world is its own magic" -Suzuki
I consider the purpose of my spirituality to be...
Connecting to something greater than myself, Finding happiness and peace within, Helping me cope with the struggles of life, Building a personal relationship with God, Instilling morality and virtues, Belonging to a like-minded community, Helping me grow as a person
After the body dies...
I don't know, but I'm not worried about it
I would define a spiritual experience as...
One moment of true contentment.
A spiritual experience I would like to share...
Eating a perfect pomegranate. 2020 has been a banner year for them.
The spiritual books and authors that have had the greatest impact on me...
Zen Mind Beginners Mind (Shunryu Suzuki). The Tao of Leadership. Grand Master Dogen (and the Furious Five).
