About Me
I'm a sensitive, compassionate person who has practiced meditation in several Buddhist traditions. I'm studying the dharma as taught by the Buddha, though I find it can be extremely challenging at times! I have a passion for social justice and have been a vegetarian for more than 25 years. My interests include music (I sing and play the guitar a bit)y, spirituality, travel, health and wellness, psychology and sociology. I'm committed to personal growth, have a simple lifestyle and value deep, open and honest communication. I consider myself a very good listener. I'm a serious person but have been told I have a great sense of humor. And I've loved R.E.M. since the 1980s.

I'm seeking someone who appreciates the interconnectedness of all people and things . . . someone who is kind, gentle and compassionate . . . someone who is creative and adventurous, and seeking meaning and beauty in this extraordinary, complicated world.

How I spend my free time:
I enjoy hanging out in coffee shops with friends, engaging in meaningful conversation, and listening to -- and sometimes playing -- music, meditating, reading (especially about Buddhism and spirituality generally). I love going for walks and doing simple things in the company of others I care about. One of my passions is traveling: I've seen much of the United States and have been to a number of foreign countries, but there are many more places I'd like to see, preferably with a partner/companion. I'm involved in a number of groups focused on meditation and personal growth.
Personality
My Personality:
Caring, Intuitive, Funny
When out with friends, I'm usually:
Trying to be a good listener
What makes me laugh hardest:
M*A*S*H
I'm happiest when:
I'm at peace with myself and my place in the world, fully present, not wanting or needing anything more than what I have (I know, this probably reads like it was lifted from a book on mindfulness.)
The things that annoy me are:
when people (including myself) are not present for themselves or others. Other things I find more than annoying are discrimination and violence in all their forms.
The best day of my life was when:
it's so tempting to go with the mindfulness theme and say "today" and talk about being in the moment, so I'll refrain from doing that. :)
If I could have dinner with any three people, they would be:
Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills, who comprised R.E.M. for the last 14 years of the band's career. I don't possibly have enough space here to explain why I would want to have dinner with them, and it almost seems superficial to simply want to "have dinner" with them. The music and lyrics they created, combined with their integrity and social consciousness, have had a profound impact on me.
Interests
My interests, hobbies, and pastimes include...
Board Games, Movies, Museums, Music (listening), Music (performing), Politics, Reading, Travel, Volunteering, Writing
The physical activities I'm interested in are:
Basketball, Gym/Weightlifting, Martial Arts, Tennis, Walking
For fun I like to...
Listen to music, read, write, tell jokes and make puns that people occasionally find funny.
My favorite movies:
Spinal Tap, And Justice for All, School of Rock, and many more.
My favorite music:
I like a wide variety of music, but if I had to choose a favorite it would be '80s/early '90s alternative rock, especially jangle pop and folk rock (see R.E.M., Miracle Legion and Toad the Wet Sprocket). But I also have learned to appreciate many other kinds of music, including jazz, classical, and blues.
My favorite books:
I'm currently reading and enjoying "Unsubscribe" by Josh Korda, and have been reading a variety of other Buddhist authors, including Thich Nhat Hanh and Tara Brach.
Values
The virtues I consider most important are...
Compassion, Kindness, Open-Mindedness
The things I'm most grateful for in life are...
family, friends, intuition and the ability to empathize and to reflect clearly on things, though I would like to be able to do the latter more consistently.
My goals, and what I want out of life...
I can't possibly answer this, other than to say that I aspire to live in a way that relinquishes the notion of having goals, or at least being too attached to them.
And to be engaged in that process with a loving community and deep interconnectedness that includes a lifetime commitment with a partner who shares my desire to make the world a better place. Maybe those are pretty lofty goals, after all. :)
My greatest accomplishments in life have been...
Again, I'm trying to change my perspective on things like "goals" and "accomplishments." I've done many interesting and exciting things in my life but in the end what matters most to me is acting with kindness and respect for myself and others.
Five or ten years from now, I see myself...
I'll have to research how the Buddha would have answered this question before revisiting it. I'm not sure he would have answered the question, at least not in the traditional job-interview kind of way.
My political inclination can be described as...
Very liberal
Spirituality
Spiritual Orientation:
Buddhist
I consider my spirituality...
Very important to me
What brought me to my spiritual path and motivated my interest...
After many years of pursuing different spiritual paths, I discovered the wisdom of Buddhism a few years ago. I was attracted to its non-dogmatic approach to spirituality, its emphasis on compassion, interconnectedness and mindfulness.
I consider the purpose of my spirituality to be...
Connecting to something greater than myself, Finding happiness and peace within, Helping me cope with the struggles of life, Instilling morality and virtues, Belonging to a like-minded community, Helping me grow as a person
I would define a spiritual experience as...
I'm not sure I believe there is such a thing, in that each moment that we are present for ourselves and others, and aware of our interconnectedness, is the essence of spirituality.
The spiritual books and authors that have had the greatest impact on me...
Thich Nhat Hanh, Tara Brach, Rod Owens, Josh Korda.
