Located in: Paignton, England (United Kingdom)
Seeking a: Woman (67 to 76)

About Me
I am new to the area and am looking to meet new people.
I have an active personal life and love exploring new things and new places.
I have been a student of Theravada Buddhism and practice vipassana meditation since 1993.

I was born in the UK, but my family emigrated to California in 1970. I lived and worked there, raised a family, and retired in 2018. My children have since built their adult lives in the US, and after my ex said she wanted a very different direction, I chose to retire in the UK. Life has been and continues to be journey, a revelation and at this juncture a celebration of gratitude. While the Buddha is thought to be agnostic regarding the divine, I do believe in God and my relationship is both personal and Universal. As an engineer and scientist I never cease to be amazed at the wonders of life and the Universe around us.

How I spend my free time:
Now that I'm retired I have a lot of flexible time available to me. I purchased a small bungalow within walking distance of the beach and coastal footpath. So, beyond the normal daily chores, you know, making the bed, prepping breakfast, shopping and cooking (and picking up the place), my current focus is on building a social footprint. Right now I meet a bunch of guys on Monday for guy chat (mostly rubbish!) and then on Wednesday and Friday I meet with a group of people who are into board games. I play for the social interaction (and much laughter) and not so much to win. I do frequent the local Leisure Centre to workout and swim. At my age it's really important to stay healthy and to that end I really don't drink and have never smoked (ok - well I did some weed once when I was an undergraduate at UC Berkeley back in 1973 - I didn't like it!). By myself I play chess and my current rating is around 850, I read a lot and watch really bad (re adolescent or immature) TV. I'm into SF, Police drama's, comedy - like I really like the BBC's "The Outlaw's" and the comedy series "Frasier".
Personality
My Personality:
Quiet, Intelligent, Caring
When out with friends, I'm usually:
Trying to be a good listener
What makes me laugh hardest:
Niles Crane (played by David Hyde Pierce - Frasier)
I'm happiest when:
The sun rises, clouds bring wind and rain, children laugh, the road that winds on and on.
The things that annoy me are:
...questions like this... (wow this is really long!) :-~
The best day of my life was when:
I welcomed my son and daughter into this world....
If I could have dinner with any three people, they would be:
The Buddha, Jesus and Nelson Mandela breaking bread where I would ask "What is the single most essential action humanity must take to evolve beyond conflict and suffering?"
Interests
My interests, hobbies, and pastimes include...
Board Games, Computers, Movies, Music (listening), Politics, Reading, Science
The physical activities I'm interested in are:
Gym/Weightlifting, Swimming, Walking
For fun I like to...
Reading, meeting new people and current people I'm getting to know.
My favorite movies:
I'm into SciFi mostly (not the horror stuff) for instance I really liked "The Expanse" that was one Amazon Prime. I've also read all 8 books. I'm not going to be pretentious here, I tried reading the Stanford University summer reading list and couldn't get through it - far too esoteric!. For the most part I'm a simple straightforward kind of guy for whom you don't have to "read between the lines".
My favorite music:
Some classical mostly 70's - 2000's and onwards pop and rock and roll, and I'm a real sucker for movie themes.
My favorite books:
The Expanse by James S. A. Corey (a pseudonym for two writers)
The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco
The Far Pavilions and the Shadow of the Moon by M.M. Kaye
The Hitchhiker's Guide by Douglas Adams
The Poetry of Mary Oliver
...and much more highlighting my juvenile tastes :-)
Values
The virtues I consider most important are...
Compassion, Empathy, Humility
The things I'm most grateful for in life are...
At this point in life I have an ongoing constant practice of gratitude, thanking the Universe (God) and my guardian angels for all things pleasant and unpleasant. A note on the unpleasant- unpleasant things almost always showcase an opportunity to grow and evolve.
My goals, and what I want out of life...
a really good cup of tea - no wait, be serious, now, (you should be laughing now) goals change over time so right now it would be to connect at the heart level with my beloved.
My greatest accomplishments in life have been...
Well I engineered a really cool environmental radiological monitoring system for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. I've many professional accomplishments under my belt however, I'm most proud of the fact that I broke the pattern of abuse that I was raised under (yea I know poor English) and the arc of my life now embraces a path toward enlightenment, humility, and kindness.
Five or ten years from now, I see myself...
Well I'm turning 74 this year (2026) so five and ten years from now... well I really hope I've met my beloved and we are aging well together!
My political inclination can be described as...
Middle of the road
Spirituality
Spiritual Orientation:
Buddhist, Spiritual, not religious
I consider my spirituality...
Pretty important to me
What brought me to my spiritual path and motivated my interest...
Well, life started in 1952 in the UK (Warwick), a nation recovering from the ravages of of WWII. My father was born in Trinidad (I'm half Asian Indian) and my mom was born in Sutton Coldfield. My life can be divided into 20 year segments or lifetimes. The first 20 years was characterised by violence and abuse. The second 20 years was characterised by healing and growth. When I turned 40, I remember, standing on a hillside within Berkeley National lab overlooking the San Francisco Bay and reorienting my life from looking backward to looking forward. It was then I was introduced to Buddhism at Spirit Rock Meditation Centre (you can look it up on the web). I remember my first Monday night sitting led by Jack Kornfield, one of the founding teachers. Sitting in meditation came naturally and without difficulty. I vividly remember the first dharma talk where the words resonated profoundly and deeply with me.
I consider the purpose of my spirituality to be...
Connecting to something greater than myself, Finding happiness and peace within, Building a personal relationship with God, Helping me grow as a person
After the body dies...
The soul reincarnates until achieving Liberation
The spiritual books and authors that have had the greatest impact on me...
A Path with Heart by Jack Kornfield
