Located in: portland, OR (USA)
Seeking a: Woman (60 to 74)

About Me
Though I am based in Portland OR now, I spent 15 years traveling to many parts of the world as part of my job --India, Japan, China, Turkey, Israel, Costa Rica, Nepal, and Thailand, among many others. The travel opened me up to new ways of looking at things and new possibilities in life -- that life can always become larger, more vibrant, and even more interesting than it already is right now. I am looking for someone who feels this same way about relationships -- that they have the possibility of opening us up even more to deeper parts of ourselves, to each other, and to all the joy that life has to offer.

I have worked with Zen Buddhism for a long time, both teaching in the college classroom (among other topics) and trying to practice it in one form or another myself. But after a few decades, I now connect my practice less with formal meditation and more with attempts at a richer and more poetic engagement of life in the world. [Note: As of January 2024, I am no longer a paid member on this site and cannot initiate conversations, only respond to them.].

How I spend my free time:
Reading, listening to music, going to movies or the theatre; walking through art museums or different neighborhoods of the city. I especially enjoy the trees, people, dogs, grass, water, kites and games of a nearby park. I never tire of visits or holidays overseas, more South or Southeast Asia than Europe. I love time hiking in the mountains, or at the beach with the sound/feel of the waves.
Personality
My Personality:
Intuitive, Funny, Intelligent
When out with friends, I'm usually:
Trying to be a good listener
What makes me laugh hardest:
My own mistakes during the day --
I'm happiest when:
A surprising moment or opening in art, nature, weather or relationship; a long walk with a close friend or family member; the first greens in the spring or the brilliant colors of the fall; the moment in the afternoon when the sun comes through the skylight in my kitchen; hiking in the Rocky Mountains near Banff ; times near a mountain lake or the ocean; unexpected moments of connection with people I meet for the first time while travelling . The water has been a second home to me since I was two years old -- I am always happy there.
The things that annoy me are:
Intolerance, unkiind actions, gossip, negativity. What's the point?
If I could have dinner with any three people, they would be:
My grandfather, as he worked very successfully internationally for most of his life; the Dalai Lama for all that he is, does, and has accomplished; David Whyte, the poet, to discuss with him his view on the poetic engagement of daily life.
Interests
My interests, hobbies, and pastimes include...
Eating Out, Movies, Museums, Music (listening), Reading, Theater, Travel
The physical activities I'm interested in are:
Aerobics, Biking, Camping, Gym/Weightlifting, Hiking/Backpacking, Running, Swimming, Walking, Yoga (hatha)
For fun I like to...
Walks in the parks or through the city; brunch -- I like the slowness of it; gym, movies, theatre, music, books, reading; good coffee; almost all art galleries and museums here and especially abroad; walking along the beach next to the waves;
My favorite music:
Loving the variety and mix of Pandora now. I listen to a lot of World Music from many different countries and try to bring some home with me when I travel; I enjoy some classical music, as well as oldies such as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan. I do not require my friends to have similar taste in music, books or movies!
Values
The virtues I consider most important are...
Compassion, Empathy, Loyalty
The things I'm most grateful for in life are...
My family, my closest friends, those moments of connection, my different Buddhist teachers, my students, the chance I have had to travel so widely, to be in so many astonishing and wonder-filled places and to meet so many different people all over the world.
Five or ten years from now, I see myself...
One year at a time!
My political inclination can be described as...
Liberal
Spirituality
Spiritual Orientation:
Buddhist, Spiritual, not religious
I consider my spirituality...
Very important to me
What brought me to my spiritual path and motivated my interest...
In my late twenties, involvement with Gestalt dreamwork, yoga, bodywork, and depth psychology led to exposure to different kinds of meditation and a weekend retreat at a Zen Buddhist monastery. I returned later for a few 3-month terms and then a seven-year stretch as a full-time resident Now I seem to have come full circle, returning again to work with the body and emotions to better integrate meditation into relationships in daily life.
I consider the purpose of my spirituality to be...
Connecting to something greater than myself, Finding happiness and peace within, Helping me cope with the struggles of life, Belonging to a like-minded community, Helping me grow as a person
A spiritual experience I would like to share...
Retreats at Buddhist monasteries in California, India, Japan and Thailand; breakfast on a hotel roof in Dharmsala; a sunrise boat ride down the Ganges river in Varanasi; the blooming of the cherry blossoms in Kyoto; watching Sufi dancing in Istanbul; or just seeing a little girl skipping in the sun through fall leaves in a local park. /// Yet also seeing the connection between tension and intimacy in a relationship, that these two hold the possibility of being the inside-out of one another; that a difficulty or conflict in a relationship can be held in spaciousness and trust until an opening occurs -- and when that opening occurs, two people can choose to walk through it into both healing and greater intimacy.
The spiritual books and authors that have had the greatest impact on me...
Shunryu Suzuki, Pema Chodron, the Dalai Lama; Mantak Chia's work on the Taoist Circulation of Male and Female Energy; Margot Anand; some poems of Rumi, Antonio Machado, David Whyte, Mary Oliver.
